Nonstop Weekend Flights Between Cody, Wyoming and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport to be Offered This Summer
CODY, Wyoming, February 5, 2014 – Trips to Cody, Wyo. and the surrounding area – including Yellowstone National Park – will be easier to make this summer as United Airlines has added nonstop weekend service between Cody’s Yellowstone Regional Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
The flights will depart O’Hare on Saturdays at 6 p.m. and arrive in Cody at 7:57 p.m. The return flights will depart Cody on Sundays at 8 a.m. and arrive at Chicago O’Hare at 11:42 a.m. The new flights will run weekends June 28 through August 17, 2014 and are available for sale at www.united.com as of February 1, 2014.
“For the many people whose time is so precious, these flights open up options for them to see our version of heaven here in Cody as well as one of the world’s most fascinating destinations – Yellowstone National Park,” said Claudia Wade, director of the Park County Travel Council, the marketing arm for Buffalo Bill’s Cody/Yellowstone Country. “We also welcome those international travelers who can now get here with one less stop.”
Located in northwest Wyoming 50 miles from the east gate of Yellowstone National Park, Cody was founded in the mid-1890s by its namesake Col. William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. At that time, the region was much like it is today – rugged, breathtakingly beautiful and relatively undeveloped. It features mountains, rivers, quirky rock formations and spectacular wildlife.
While many people plan their vacations with Cody as the preferred gateway to Yellowstone, countless others – often people who lamented not staying in town longer the first time they visited – build in enough time to enjoy Cody’s fun, Western attractions.
The town offers a wide variety of activities and places to see such as the Cody Nite Rodeo, the entertaining Cody Gunfighters, the world-class Buffalo Bill Center of the West (actually, five museums in one), Old Trail Town/Museum of the Old West, Tecumseh’s Old West Miniature Village and Museum and great music such as Dan Miller’s Cowboy Music Revue. The region features terrific blue-ribbon trout fishing, endless opportunities for hiking and riding horses and other outdoor activities. The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, at the site of the Heart Mountain Internment Camp, home to some 11,000 Japanese-American citizens who were interned there following Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, opened in August 2011. The Center includes thoughtfully presented exhibits that explore that difficult period in our country’s history.
“And all of this is within minutes of our airport,” added Wade. “To get to Cody from the airport, just leave the parking lot, turn right and drive for less than five minutes. There’s barely enough time to call your mother and tell her you arrived.”
For those heading into the park, two entrances are easily accessible from town. The road between Cody, Wyo. to the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park is 52 miles and runs along the north fork of the Shoshone River. Called the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, this road goes through the Wapiti Valley and past numerous interesting rock formations, guest ranches and Pahaska Tepee, Buffalo Bill’s original hunting lodge.
To get to the Northeast Entrance, visitors take the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (the area certainly has its share of scenic roads) to Cooke City, Mont. before entering the park and traveling through the Lamar Valley called “America’s Serengeti” because of the prolific wildlife found there.
Yellowstone Country is comprised of the towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse as well as the valley east of Yellowstone National Park.
The area of Park County is called “Buffalo Bill’s Cody/Yellowstone Country” because it was the playground of Buffalo Bill Cody himself. Buffalo Bill founded the town of Cody in 1896, and the entire region was driven and is still heavily influenced by the vision of the Colonel. Today its broad streets, world-class museum Buffalo Bill Center of the West and thriving western culture host nearly 1 million visitors annually.
