Whoever said, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” must have traveled the I-90 Shuffle. Instead of bypassing some of the best scenery you’ll ever see, move through it and marvel at every twist and turn in the road. Make getting there just as fun—and just as spectacular—as the legendary park itself.

Sure, you could choose the boring lull of the straight and steady Interstate. But you don’t know what you’d be missing—the journey to Yellowstone over Wyoming’s magical Big Horn Mountains and a chance to explore the wonderful towns of Buffalo Bill’s Cody/Yellowstone Country along the way. Between the Black Hills and the legendary park, there’s a lot of west to roam! From iconic Mount Rushmore, a stop at the Northeast Wyoming Welcome Center near Sundance is the perfect place to plan your I-90 Shuffle. Swinging north off I-90 to Highway 14 takes you up the Big Horn Mountains and through the Bighorn National Forest, to Powell. If you divert south to Highway 16 at Buffalo, be sure to meander into the old town of Meeteetse on your way to Cody—the rodeo capital of the world, where the two routes join again. From there, the one-hour trek west to Yellowstone has been called the most scenic 50 miles in America. Either way you choose, the sights are colorful and breathtaking and the route is like no other.
