Cody Yellowstone offers numerous mountain biking trails.

CODY, Wyo., June 13, 2023 – Cody Yellowstone will be hosting two major events for bicycle enthusiasts this year, a development which reflects the outdoor recreation-rich destination’s efforts to entice increasing numbers of recreation enthusiasts.

Some 300 bicyclists affiliated with a nonprofit tour operator based in Bend, Ore., Bicycle Rides Northwest (BRNW), will arrive in Cody on Wednesday, June 21 for a two-night stop that is part of the group’s Montana 2023 tour. Riders will be arriving that day after riding the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. On Thursday, June 22, participants will have the option of an out-and-back ride in the Wapiti Valley on Highway 14.

“Cody Yellowstone is very excited to be hosting this group, which will include riders from around the country,” said Ryan Hauck, executive director of Cody Yellowstone, marketing arm for the region that includes the towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse, a large swath of the Shoshone National Forest and about half of Yellowstone National Park. “Bicycle Rides Northwest has done an amazing job building the course around some of the most impressive landscapes in northwestern Wyoming, and I am excited that riders will have a chance to experience this scenic and wild destination.”

The riders are supported by some 60 crew members and vendors who provide catering, mechanical and baggage services and other support. The tour operator also positions signage alerting drivers to the event in places where they are likely to encounter the riders. The organization emphasizes being good visitors to towns along the route.

“We love taking our riders to the most beautiful places in the Northwest,” said BRNW executive director Jim Moore. “A big part of that is seeing new

places and meeting new people. We want our riders to be respectful of local residents and businesses and convey that cycles are a positive presence in town and on the road. We find letting people in each town know we’re coming makes a better experience for everyone because it is not a surprise to see hundreds of riders spread out along a road.”

Cody Yellowstone will also be hosting Fist Full of Dirt, a popular two-day, Wild West-themed travel race. The annual race, which famous cyclist Pete Stetina recently raced, includes three races: “The Good,” a 20-mile race, “The Bad,” a 60-mile race and “The Ugly,” a 100-mile race. Scheduled for Sept. 2 and 3, the riders will experience many of the destination’s mountain bike trails. The riders will also be experiencing many of Cody Yellowstone’s attractions as well as breweries, music and other entertaiment for what the group is calling “a Wild West Weekend to remember.”

Cycling is one of the many outdoor recreation activities that Cody Yellowstone as been actively promoting as part of its lauded “Cody Yellowstone Wild” campaign (#WildWatch), which includes Wild Watch ambassadors – locals who help promote the destination’s authentic and wild offerings. The theme is also highlighted in the 2023 Cody Yellowstone Vacation Guide and across the destination’s various marketing platforms.

“As we continue to focus on the many wild adventures to be experienced in Cody Yellowstone, we hope that other groups like Bicycle Rides Northwest and Fist Full of Dirt will take a close look at this destination for their future outdoor adventures,” said Hauck.
