Cody Yellowstone’s open vistas appeal to photographers of all levels.

Stephen Matera this winter.

Scheduled for February 8-12, 2024, the workshop will expose participants to various techniques for capturing images in winter light – or lack thereof – throughout the region.

With its open vistas, dramatic mountain views, plentiful wildlife and dark skies, this region to the east of Yellowstone National Park is a photographer’s paradise. In fact, numerous full-time photographers make their home in the vast region.

The Wild Winter Photography Workshop was staged for the first time last year.

The workshop will provide opportunities to capture images of wildlife.

“Last year’s photography workshop was incredibly popular, and it drew photographers from all over the country seeking to enhance their skills by capturing Cody Yellowstone’s extreme beauty in the winter,” said Ryan Hauck, executive director of Cody Yellowstone, the marketing arm for the region that includes the towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse, a large swath of the Shoshone National Forest and about half of Yellowstone National Park. “Many of last year’s participants reported acquiring skills that they have applied in their day-to-day photography endeavors.”

The cost of the workshop is $1,399 per person and includes:

  • Four nights of accommodations at Buffalo Bill’s Irma Hotel
  • Three full workshop days
  • Welcome event at the Buffalo Bill Center of The West
  • Photography lessons with photographers Scott Kranz and Stephen Matera
  • Pre-workshop session with photographers
  • Welcome kit
  • Trail snacks
  • $100 food and beverage credit
  • Transportation during workshop days

Up to eight participants will work closely with the workshop leaders to capture the photos at different times of day. And after the sun goes down, opportunities go up for astrophotography under the uninterrupted night sky.

Leading up to the workshop, participants will meet with instructors virtually to discuss previous experience as well as what they hope to gain from the workshop. A welcome kit, itinerary and full packing list will be sent in advance.

Each day of the workshop features shooting at sunrise and sunset, with light to moderate hiking. Participants should be physically fit for hiking with camera packs.
