Cody Yellowstone’s Dude Ranches Were Eco-Lodges Before Eco-Lodges Were a Thing; And That’s Just One of Many Reasons Travelers Should Consider a Ranch Vacation

CODY, July 1, 2026Adventurers who prioritize traveling sustainably may be surprised to learn that dude and guest ranches like those that dot the forestland in Northwestern Wyoming’s Cody Yellowstone have been staging environmentally supportive adventure vacations ever since they first started appearing as a vacation option more than a century ago. In fact, the region’s ranches have embraced ecotourism tenants such as preserving the integrity of natural resources, long before the word “ecotourism” was established.

And that’s just one of many reasons travelers can feel good about booking a dude or guest ranch vacation in Cody Yellowstone.

“Western dude ranches like those found here have been providing guests with subtle – and sometimes not-so-subtle – lessons about preserving natural resources and adhering to other sustainable practices for many decades, and this conservation-focused style of travel epitomizes a classic Western vacation,” said Michael Wambolt, executive director of Cody Yellowstone, the marketing arm for the region that includes the towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse, a large swath of the Shoshone National Forest and about half of Yellowstone National Park. “Dude and guest ranches here strive to not only encourage their guests to respect the land, but they also hope that these guests will apply lessons in sustainability they learn as they experience adventures like horseback riding and fishing to their everyday lives when they return home.”

Ranches have always been self-sustaining entities out of necessity, as they are often situated far from towns and deep in wildlife country. For example, ranches source local food from nearby ranchers and farmers; minimize waste by composting kitchen scraps and limiting single-use items; practice eco-conscious horse care such as rotational grazing; use native plants for landscaping to minimize need for water and educate guests on how to interact responsibly with wildlife.

There are 16 dude, guest or working ranches in Cody Yellowstone. Dude ranches typically offer all-inclusive itineraries while guest ranches – sometimes called day ranches – offer optional lodging and an array of ala carte adventures. Cody Yellowstone’s one working ranch, Fiddle Back Ranch, also provides guests with the option of observing workers as they perform everyday tasks on the ranch.

Eco-tourism is just one of many reasons many tourists who prioritize responsible and personally enriching travel experiences should consider a dude or guest ranch vacation.

Here are several other advantages of dude and guest ranch vacations in Cody Yellowstone:

Safe backcountry adventures – Wranglers and guides employed at dude and guest ranches are comfortable in the wilderness, and an important part of their job is to teach guests how to respectfully and safely adventure deep in the backcountry. Ranches typically offer a variety of horseback trail riding adventures, from two-hour trail rides to all-day riding adventures. Ranches also frequently feature fishing, and guides can teach them how to fish responsibly.

Fresh food – Most ranches source food from local farmers, ensuring that the food that appears at a cookout or on the dinner table is fresh and wholesome.

Starry nights – Most ranches are situated far from city lights, so there’s minimal light pollution. Wyoming has some of the clearest and darkest skies in the country, particularly in northwestern Wyoming’s Park County, where just 30,000 residents are spread out over 7,000 square miles.

Unplugging – Although many ranches are equipped with Wi-Fi, guests often find themselves voluntarily unplugging from their devices so they can fully enjoy the views, sounds and vibes of the wilderness.

Multi-generational adventures – Ranch vacations are a great way for multiple generations of families and friends to share a vacation experience. Young children can start with gentle pony rides around a corral and learn the basics of a responsible equestrian adventure, while older teens and adults may head out for longer rides. Non-riders can spend their days walking ranch property and relaxing with a book. Then the generations can all participate in an evening cookout or singalong around a campfire.

Solo travel – With plenty of guests to chat with over dinners and guides to assure their safety and comfort, ranch vacations can also be a perfect fit for solo travelers.
